After reading the article about John Cage's search for silence it has allowed me to create an appreciation for the piece. Like many people when I first listened to this I was honestly just confused and thought that it was lame that he would do this to people who paid money to watch people perform. Learning more about how John was as a kid and what he went through allowed me to understand why he would create not just music like this but an art piece. That is a major take away, in that this is really not only music but John Cage was able to create art. Another thing that I found inspiring in this article is John Cage has plenty of success and could have just stuck with one style of music. Instead though he pursued what he wanted to do whether his audience liked it or not. This is just inspiring because even when people are not loving what you are doing, if you love it that is all that truly matters. Music has such a predisposed idea to it and when someone challenges that like John did it makes people really wonder what music is. I think living in this era would have been super interesting to be able to see how it was impacting people. Nowadays music can be all sorts of noises and random beats that are appreciated around the world. Later in the article it talks about how John began collecting mushrooms and that is how he made money. One of the most well known and monumental performers was making the predominance of his money from collecting and selling mushrooms to restaurants. That is just mind blowing to me and how perception on music has changed so much.
